Size: A "wide mouth" ventral hernia is not an accepted term for a hernia in the medical field. However, i assume that your physician was trying to describe your hernia defect as being large. Hernias come in all shapes, sizes and positions. The wider a hernia defect, the more difficult it is to repair and the more likely it is for the repair to fail over time.

.: Hernia is a defect in the muscle/ fascia of the abdominal wall. The neck of the hernia defect is the openning in the abdominal wall. Hernia is worrisome because of the high chance of bowel intrapment by its neck which will lead to pain, incarceration and strangulation of bowel. A wide neck hernia has a less chance of bowel intrapment due to the size of the neck. I hope my answer helped.
