I dont know: I wouldnt eat it. Might check with your local health department to see if sand is toxic. Also might want to see a doctor and discuss your habit. In some cases, it is possible you may have nutritional deficiency that may be creating this unusual food interest.

Do you mean to EAT?: If so, yes, it could be a sign that you have anemia. Also, sand (unless sterile) can contain lots of bad bugs, including some that can cause anemia. You should find some food that gives you the same enjoyable sensation (coarse ground dried corn possibly?) and eat that instead. And please see a doctor to be tested both for anemia and for those bugs that can come from sand.

Bon Appetit: Craving is one thing. How much of it do you eat?In either case that's unusual-unless you have an iron deficiency which,if treated may end your cravings. If not,I'd suggest switching to something similar with more nutritional value like popcorn(maybe a movie, too?)and then think about seeing a therapist to get clear on what may be going on with you.Until then, clean the sand thoroughly before munching
