Usually a: single xray of the wrist/hand is the standard way to evaluate bone age(i.e. the degree to which the growth plates are fused relative to standard normals).

Open vs Fused: Usually you would take or need radiographic imaging to which a radiologist or someone who is used to examining films will let you know if the growth plates are open or fused.

Xray: an xray exam can show if the growth plates are open or are fused. They are compared to a book of growth plates based on age and site of the xray.
