See below: The low iodine diet improves the detection of thyroid cancer, including any cancer that has spread to another part of the body. Thyroid tissue picks up iodine to use it to form thyroxine. A low iodine diet makes the thyroid tissue "hungrier" and improves the uptake of radioactive iodine.
