Pressure release: If you seem to consistently experience relief of heartburn after passing gas, there are a few possibilities. Most likely, the decrease in intra-abdominal pressure with flatulence may decrease compression on the stomach, decreasing reflux volume and acid exposure in the lower esophagus. This acidic reflux material causes the sensation of heartburn. Not a common correlation, but certainly plausible.
