Yes: Pap smears are still indicated every three years at this age and she should have a pelvic examination yearly. Pap smears do not screen for pain or irregular bleeding. They are designed to screen the cervix for viral infection which can lead to changes in the cells. Some changes can lead to cancer of the cervix. Technically, she is due for a pap smear this July.

Maybe: At 51 you should still have testing. Current recommendations advise testing for cervical dysplasia with testing for high risk HPV and repeating the testing every 3 years if it is negative. If you are only doing the traditional Pap test and have had 3 negatives in 3 consecutive years you can also space them out. Hope this helps
