Eating disorder: Syrup of ipecac is no longer recommended, especially in children, due to risk of aspiration pneumonia. Your friend's intentional induction of vomiting Is strongly suggestive of an eating disorder which can be quite dangerous. Please encourage your friend to seek help for this very serious problem.

No: The drug can injure the heart muscle which adds up over time. It is no longer readily available in pharmacies or stores in the US.
