Nervous system: Both epilepsy and migraine affect the nervous system and a medication effective for one disorder could help with the other disorder as well.

Similar mechanism: many of the medications that treat migraine headaches and seizures are stabilizers of the membranes surrounding neurons in the brain. Several also stabilize the membranes surrounding nerve fibers in the pain pathway.
