Acute pain: If you've had disc related back problems in the past, then most likely you are suffering from an acute recurrence. For my patients, intramuscular injection(s) of steroid and/or NSAID can be helpful, along with a prescription for a steroid dose pack. If you want to try to avoid the doctor, you can try ice/heat, massage, gentle stretches, regular walking, and NSAIDs (i.e. ibuprofen, Aleve).

Back pain: Is one of the most common presenting symptoms in the Office and the Emergency room. With your pre-existing History of the Herniated discs, you are certainly more susceptible to pains in your back. See your Doctor and maybe a good Physical therapy program designed for you as well as some medications after a physical exam can be of benefit to you. Best wishes.
