Sinus congestion: can cause it to be somewhat harder to get air through the nasal passages into the lungs. It is common for people to breath through their mouths to compensate for this. That is why people with sinus congestion often awake with a dry mouth (from mouth being open for breathing during sleep). Chewing gum can make breathing through the mouth less efficient and result in shortness of breath.
