I don't have benadryl (diphenhydramine) but i do have claritin d. i'm having an allergic reaction and it causes welts and itching. can i take the claritin to get the same effect benadryl (diphenhydramine) has?

Probably not: You can try taking a couple claritin, but you won't likely get the same effect as benadryl (diphenhydramine). Good luck!

Antihistamines: Both Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and Claritin are antihistamines. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is an older drug, without the "non-drowsy" properties of Claritin, but it probably works a bit better. If Claritin is what's in the house, go ahead and use the Claritin. And be careful. Even nondrowsy drugs can impair the reaction time needed for safe driving.
