Dry mouth: Dry mouth from radiation treatment is usually cuased by damage to the saliva glands. Talk with your dentist and health care team about management of dry mouth. There are saliva substitutes and mouthrinses that can help (biotene products). Chewing sugarless gum can encourage saliva production. Also drink plenty of water, especially during meals. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol.

Biotene plus....: Speak to your dentist about the use of saliva substitutes such as biotene. They have a number of helpful products. Also discuss the use of prescription Fluoride rinses or gels to protect your teeth, as a dry mouth makes your more susceptible to dental caries and gum problems. Make sure you are seen every 3 months to monitor your teeth and gums.

Options: Acupuncture, biotene, Pilocarpine are all helpful options to increase saliva. Numosyn provides symptomatic relief without addressing the root of the problem.
