Hypnagogic jerks: When the body enters sleep, the mind can cause a brief, 1 sec jerk throughout the body. These brief hypnagogic jerks are normal. If the jerking lasts 30-90 seconds, that is more consistent with a seizure.

Likely normal: You may be describing HYPNOGOGIC JERKS. This occurs in some people as body tremors, in others as sudden jerks of limbs or the whole body as they fall asleep. This is normal and is not related to epilepsy. On the other hand, episodes can occur either after falling asleep or upon awakening that are epileptic. You should get seen by a neurologist.
