Sit ups: i would suggest sit -up, planks and a general conditioning program which includes an aerobic workout. See a good , qualified personal trainer for assistance. Best of Luck!

Crunches and cardio.: Truth be told, I think he's a bit too young for an intense workout regimen. But to build the abs, he can do crunches and knee lifts, maybe twice or thrice weekly, not every day. More importantly, he should do cardiovascular exercise to burn any fat that may be covering the abs. At his age, the important lesson with exercise is to learn proper form and not be sloppy with exercise technique.
