Several reasons: A knee replacement would have necessitated bedrest for a period of time. Several things could have happened. In 10-20% of the population the sciatic nerve pierces the piriformis muscle. If this muscle goes into spasm (as it might when your sitting all the time when normally active) then there will be deep buttock pain radiating to the leg in some cases. Sciatic root compression can also occur.
