Dry eyes: You may be suffering from dry eyes. If your eyes lids do not close completely while you sleep and the surface of your eye is exposed, it can become dry, and with lack of moisture, become difficult to open. Also, the eyes natural response is often to create moisture by making mucus which can cause the eye lids to get shut and difficult to open. Try artificial tears at night and warm compresses.
