Causes vary: Bullae (or abnormal air sacs) of the lungs can be caused by both acquired and congenital forms of lung disease. Patients may develop bullae in conjunction with emphysema which may be related to smoking cigarrettes, Environmental toxins, and congenital diseases. Otherwise healthy patients can develop a bulla of the lung that ruptures and causes a pneumothorax. Important to discuss with doctor.
