Not really new: Occupational therapists have always dealt with the consequences of chronic disease, and have provided counseling to numerous patients. Suppose we could call some of this "psychotherapy". But historically, not only psychiatrists and psychologists, but also clergy and social workers and speech therapists have provided psych support.
