I've heard that you don't really have to be doing anything particularly dangerous at all to get a ruptured eardrum. is this true?

Perforated eardrum: I don't know what you mean. Most eardrum rupture's occur due to common factors such as trauma to the ear, a bad ear infection, allergies, or chronic eustachian tube problems. Any questions or concerns should be seen by an ENT physician.
