Multifactorial: Causes of depression and anxiety can be multifactorial such as : having a positive family history , brain chemistry changes, medical illnesses (i.E thyroid disease), side effects from medications, major life stressors, substance use/abuse and history of abuse/trauma.

Risk is 1.5-3 times greater if you have a 1st degree relative w/depression. Also medications like beta-blockers, and medical conditions like hypothyroidism. Histories of trauma & abuse; substance abuse; loss & death; social conflict & isolation.

Family history of depression & anxiety is commonly found with women w/these disorders, but isn't a hard or fast rule. Losing a parent before age 10, hormonal changes throughout life, current losses, medical illnesses, & life & relationship stresses all can contribute.
