Too numerous to list: Anxiety & depression are normal human emotions that occur in response to life events and the way we interpret them. When these experiences become part of a constellation of associated symptoms and problems they form the basis of various mental disorders. Tip: don't go overboard in your interpretations of events or your prospects for success in the future. Keep taking action to move toward goals.

The short answer: Currently, it is believed that they are caused by a combination of genetic predisposition and social, environmental factors and events. Usually a person predisposed to anxiety and depression will have difficulties adjusting to change and will not be emotionally resilient. That means can not recover quickly after a sad or challenging event. Tx: learn how to better cope, with/ without medication.

Genes, environment: Perhaps 60-70% of the risk of developing anxiety or depression comes from a person's genetic makeup. Over 10 genes are still being investigated as causative but it is clear no one single gene is at fault but rather a combination of genes. About 30-40% of the risk comes frome stressors in the environment.

Cultivating an optimistic, resilient attitude that sees problems as solvable challenges help prevent depression.
