Inflammation : The most probable cause of the pain at the base of your sternum is probably inflammation. There are multiple pieces of connective tissue in this area that connect the lowest part of the sternum (xyphoid process) the the main middle part of the sternum. There are also pieces of cartilage that attach the stern to the ribs. Try applying ice for 20 minutes 3-4 x /day.
