Hard Question: Empathy, sympathy and compassion stand out to me. Trying to be helpful, without being "too helpful". Give them continued respect and try to listen to what they are saying, and what they are trying to say. This is a difficult spot, there is no perfect pathway for you, unfortunately. Be their ear, be their shoulder when necessary, and stay their loving child throughout. I'll pray for you both.
