A member asked:

Should the parents of children with cancer be allowed to make all of the medical decisions?

Legally, yes.: Emotionally, morally, ethically: not necessarily. Until the age of 18, except in a few specific cases, parents are legally responsible for medical decision-making regarding their children. However, it is important to work as a team to decide what is best for the patient, especially if the patient is old enough to comprehend and contribute to the decisions at hand.

Yes: All minors need the consent of their legal guardian. The decisions are actually made by the doctor, but the parents must give consent for the treatment.

Yes and no: In my opinion it is parents, by giving or refusing consent are making the decision upon the advice and guidance of their doctor. Parents always have option of 2nd opinion before giving consent. Some parents may try & make misguided decisions based on prejudice or unorthodox religious beliefs. Drs. Sometimes need judicial help to initiate treatment when parents refuse acceptable & proven remedies.
