Nitrofuran abx: Furazolidone is in the class of nitrofuran antibiotics. Apparently, in the mid-1990s, the drug was found to have carcinogenic metabolites, so it was taken off the market eventually by the FDA in 2009. The good news is that it's in the same class as Macrobid, and depending on what type of infection you're treating, there are lots of other antibiotics. Furazolidone is not very special or unique.
