If an awkward fall is taken and a pop is heard, followed by pain on the inside of the knee does that indicate a tear of the mcl?

Not always: There are a number of structures on the medial aspect of the knee that could potentially be injured in a fall. A detailed scam and possibly an MRI can uduLly tell the specific nature of the injury.

MCL or meniscus tear: With an injury to the knee that leads to an audible "pop" and medial knee pain, the most likely structures injured are either the Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) or the Medial Meniscus. Would suggest RICE treatment (rest, ice, compressive wrap, and elevation) for 1-2 weeks. If no better, have the knee elevated by an orthopaedic surgeon.
