Uterine fibroids: are the most common benign tumors in women, 40% of white women and 60% of African-American women, over the age of 35 have fibroids. The cause is not known. The strongest risk factor is heredity. Other risk factors include early age of onset of menstruation, diet high in red meats and low in fruits and vegetables, and drinking alcohol. Preventing uterine fibroids is probably not possible.

Unknown and no: It is unknown as to why some individuals acquire uterine fibroids, but they been known to occur more frequently in African and Hispanic Americans, They also tend to occur genetically to female family members from both the paternal and maternal sides. No, there isn't a way to have prevented the fibroids even thought they tend to be estrogen dependent.
