Both: Ultrasound is very good at excluding dvt above the knee but not quite as good below the knee. If your pain is persistent and an initial ultrasound is negative, it is sometime helpful to repeat the study in a few days. Unfortunately the symptoms of dvt can be both localized and generalized.

Dvt: If you have had a ultrasound that is the gold standard test to determine if you have any venous thrombosis. As a result of a negative test I would recommend that you be evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon to determine if there is no underlying musculoskeletal issue that is causing your pain.
