OK topically: Not very effective when used systemically. Periodontal organisms are becoming more resistant to doxy. For tooth abscess in Pen allergic patients clindamycin is drug of choice. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

Unlikely: The Tetracyclines are rarely if ever prescribed for tooth infections as they do not work well in those circumstances. There are so many better alternatives.

Definitely, no: Doxycycline medication does not treat bacterial infections, but it may help to prevent breakdown of gum tissue. A tooth infection won't go away without treatment and the infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. Visit a dentist ASAP for definitive treatment.

Perio infection: Doxycycline is the usual drug of choice for periodontal infections. Check with your dentist and pharmacist if you have any questions.
