Real: There is a form of narcolepsy called "sleep paralysis" which is very much what you're describing. It tends to happen when you're excessively tired and/or sleep deprived. Here's the good news: although it's very scary, it's not dangerous! You may feel like you're going to die, but you won't. When you wake up (and that can be hard to do with narcolepsy), it all goes away.
