Sharp pains: In my experience such sharp fleeting pains caused by a deep breath or other rib cage motions are often due to a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle which runs between 2 ribs. If there were fever and cough, pleurisy would be more likely. Pinched nerves usually resolve on their own, but if symptoms persist, an examination of your chest and an xray of chest and scapular would be indicated.
