A member asked:

Why is cultural competency important for health care professionals?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Understand the: patient. Culture affects on how we communicate and the same words mean different things in different cultures. In some cultures a woman may not wish to see a male doctor. In some cultures the person may not feel comfortable in questioning a person in authority such as a doctor. Cultural competence is essential for effective communication with the patient.
