Difficult : It's hard to know without more information. He could have a gastric ulcer, esophageal varices, a tear in the upper stomach from retching, etc. an upper endoscopy should let his doctors know the cause of the bleeding. I hope he feels better soon!

GI bleed: Your father is bleeding within his GI tract. This can be at any location within the GI tract from the esophagus to the colon. A gastroenterologist will search for the area of bleeding and will try to stop it via endoscopy.
