May be vaccinated: Check with your parents or pediatrician to see if you are on record as having received the VARICELLA vaccine. It was available in 1995 which means you were 1 year old when it first came out. You could be vaccinated already....which may be why you never got it.....

Get vaccinated: It's not too late to get vaccinated against varicella, as post-exposure immunization sometimes helps prevent infection or reduce symptoms if administered shortly after exposure.

Level of risk: Your exposure risk is based on where the person with chicken pox (CP) is in the course of the infection. People with CP are infectious 2 days before their rash appears up to when the last sore has crusted over ~ 10 days. As for prevention, help support you immune system. Zinc is effective at holding recently acquired viral infections in check.

Maybe/not: Most adults with no memory of varicella show evidence of past infection & are immune. If you are susceptible, a vaccination may help avoid it, but the incubation period varies from 10-21 days & there may not be time for your body to develop protection. If you do notice spots begin, contact your doc to get meds that can keep if as mild as possible.
