A member asked:

Can recurrent pulmonary embolism cause chronic hypoxia and clubbing nails? i have symptoms of pulmonary embolism with blue clubbing nails. ok d dimer.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

I suppose it is: possible, but have your doctor look for other causes such as structural heart or lung disease. Clubbing can be a sign of longstanding hypoxia, but it is really non-specific. The only way to tell for sure whether or not you have pulmonary emboli is with CT angiogram or pulmonary angiogram. Both are invasive tests, so your doctor will order them only if there is a high clinical suspicion.
