Psychotherapy: Anxiety is the symptom of something being wrong. But it is something that you are not conscious of. If the anxiety is causing difficulties in life, an evaluation by a mental health professional would be the first step. Try to reach beyond: Your comfort zone. Set some simple goals, i.e., to smile and say something at a social gathering to one new person. Practice before hand some possible things to say. Join a social group that does some activity you like, ie, hiking or volleyball. Meet with a therapist to develop some goals and practice. Good luck & let us know how it goes.

Anxiety: Try to figure out which stressors are controllable and which are out of your control. Decrease the controllable stressors and learn to regularly let go of the others. Things that can help you let go include exercise, meditation, good relationships, counseling and occasionally medications. Seek evaluation and advice from a professional if you are feeling stuck.

Anxiety is OK: Deal with the issue, if it is within your control; let it go if it is not. Learn and practice the "relaxation response" or another meditation technique. Get plenty of aerobic exercise. Stop using hyperbole or catastophizing as you think about what it going on. The facts are friendly; our interpretations of them are what generally cause problematic anxiety. Remember that some anxiety is ok.
