See hand surgeon: not knowing your age ,and having more history will make it difficult to guess,or give an advise. is the lump on the flexer or the extenser side of your index finger,is it right at the joint,or between the joint. could be a cyst from the joint,like a ganglion cyst.or a nodule on the tendons,or could be the beginning of arthritis. the best way to go and see a hand surgeon. good luck.
