A member asked:

Mom is (physically) disabled. sometimes she exaggerates, tells stories that aren't true. it's more confusing than hurtful. can you help me understand?

Be understanding: Your mother may be confused, herself and believe what she says. She may also be dealing with her need for extra support by creating situations that will draw others toward helping her. She may be bored and need more drama in her life. She may be experiencing cognitive decline in which case this will be more recent behavior and should prompt a medical evaluation for physical causes. Listen to her and be compassionate, concerned, and interested. Avoid becoming too invested in correcting her as long as no harm is done. Discuss your concerns with her doctor. She is fortunate to have you in her life.
