Why do steroid shots in the cervical spine hurt more than the thoracic or lumbar? no numbing meds used like lumbar or thoracic? why?

Varies: The response to epidural steroid injections can vary from injection to injection, but they are not necessarily different in the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine. Numbing medicine can be used to infiltrate the skin in all three areas; numbing medicine is not injected into the cervical epidural space because this could potentially cause a spinal block and at that level, respiratory arrest.
