A member asked:

What are the causes of an itch and why does scratching relieve it?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Itch and scratch: Certain nerves are active when there is an itch on the skin. Scratching seems to block the activity of these nerves temporarily and relieve the itch. The itch comes back relatively shortly. Also, if an itchy area is scratched or rubbed for a prolonged period of time, it eventually becomes more itchy.
