Virus vs bacteria: Bacterial sinus infections are often a complication of a cold which is of course very contagious. This usually can't be diagnosed until a good 10 days have gone by. Allergies may add to the risk but the actual bacteria that cause sinus infections are typically normal residents in the nasal passages that then get a foot hold in the sinuses.

All of the above.: Technically speaking, you could have given it to him, but I think that incubation period is a bit long. Could be the house if there are allergens present. Could be the season. Could be a co-worker or other acquaintance who just happened to cough in his genera direction. Could have been someone on a morning commute, or on a train or bus.
