To determine cause.: I bet your doc is sending you for a scan (which I assume to be CT or MRI) because they have found the lump to be abnormal based on clinical exam. Doing one of these tests may help in figuring out what it is (and what the next best step would be). If the scan is concerning for something serious, it is possible further tests (including biopsy) may be required to figure out what exactly this is.

Get this checked: Your doctor is probably concerned because there are lymph nodes above the clavicle that drain the chest and breasts. However, if you have had this for 8 years, and it hasn't changed at all - AND you are feeling well, I bet you'll be okay. Soft lumps are sometimes "lipomas," or fatty tumors - some people just get these more than others. But follow your doctor's advice and get checked. LGromkoMD
