Amniotic fluid: Humans never did "breathe" amniotic fluid. The oxygen exchange that happens in utero is driven by the umbilical vascular system. In other words, you "breathe" in the uterus by having direct oxygen exchanges with your mother's blood oxygen, not through your lungs.
