A member asked:

Could human babies breathe in amniotic fluid?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

They sometimes do: Infants sometimes have amniotic fluid in their mouth which can get sucked into their lungs at delivery. The OB makes an effort to clear the nose & mouth after the head is delivered, but if baby comes out rapidly that may not be possible. This material can trigger rapid breathing & a trip to the nicu for a few days as it can act identical to pneumonia. Most do well with treatment.
