Only way to know: for sure is by endoscopy and biopsy. From what you wrote, it does sounds like you are not at any high risk. Consult your doctor whether or not this study is indicated in your specific situation.

Relax: unless you have a family history of Barrett's the chances are very low at your age. Preventing GERD though decreases acid in the esophagus which leads to a decrease in cellular changes which leads to decrease in Barrett's.

Don't worry: The chance of developing Barrett's is probably very low. Things that could increase the odds are a family history of this or esophageal cancer, and smoking. Even if you did get Barrett's, the chance of it turning in to cancer is also very low. If you've had GERD symptoms for more than 5 years, consider a consultation with a gastroenterologist for a more complete evaluation. Hope this helps!
