Cyst: Most common mass on the back is a sebaceous cyst. It's benign but will continue to grow if not removed

Infected cyst: it sounds like it could be an infected sebaceous cyst. You need to see your doctor to get it examined to know for sure. Cysts can be present for years and never cause a problem. But they can become infected, become red, and painful.
