Chronic sternal pain: Hello. NSAIDs might have failed because of the type of pain you are experiencing. What are you feeling behind your sternum? Someone stabbing you? Does it burn? Is it sharp like a knife? Pins & needles? These are all type of neuropathic pain. That type of pain is treated with different type of medications (ex gabapentin, lyrica, (pregabalin)toprimate, TCAs, etc.). What movements aggravate this area of pain?

How's your heart?: I don't know what tests you've had, but substernal pain can be from reduced blood flow to your heart. If the pain is worse with exercise and better with rest, or it travels to your neck, jaw, or arm, be sure to tell your doctor.
