Symptoms, blood test: Typically, herpes causes obvious oral or genital lesions -- usually red bumps that become blisters or open sores then heal, all over a period of 2-3 weeks for the initial infection and 1-2 weeks for recurrent outbreaks. However, many cases are entirely without symptoms. Blood tests are available and can be used if herpes is suspected because of atypical symptoms or exposure to an infected partner.
