Usually PG's: PG's are hormones called prostaglandins which are normally produced by the lining of your uterus and are believed to be the primary cause of the uterine contractions which you experience as menstrual cramps. These can be severe and associated with other symptoms which may be alleviated by heating pads, rest and medications like ibuprofen, naproxens, mefenamates, oral contraceptives and others .
