Interesting question: It depends on how many days a couple avoids sex. In a 25-day cycle, they would likely need to have sex by day 10 or 11. That means avoiding sex for 9-10 days should still allow conception. If avoiding sex for menses+7 days, it means menses can only be thought of as 2-3 days. One goal in ancient times would have been having more children, so one should consider interpreting laws with that in mind.
